Rotarians partner with the Elks to create a television program addressing the Opiate Addiction Crisis

Posted by David Mangs
The Rotary District 7890 Addiction Task Force partnered with the Elks to present an educational program at Manchester Community College Thursday 10/4/2018 on the Manchester community’s response to the addiction crisis, and an explanation of how the disease of addiction takes hold of our brain and destroys the lives of addicts.  In 2017 there were 72,000 deaths from drug overdoses in America, and nearly half of Americans have a family member or close friend who has been addicted to drugs.  This epidemic cuts across all sex, race, age, educational levels and every socio-economic status.  As Rotarians we have a responsibility to address this epidemic by doing what we do best: education, collaboration, and advocacy.  The Rotary District 7890 Addiction Task Force has established three main areas of focus:  CREATE AWARENESS of the crisis, INCREASE AND IMPROVE ACCESS to needed and successful services, and REDUCE THE STIGMA OF THIS DISEASE.

Manchester Rotarian and Police Chief Marc Montminy, the Rotary District 7890 Addiction Task Force Chair, and Sarah Howroyd, MSW Co-Founder of the Manchester, CT Hope Initiative described the shocking and rapid growth of the addiction crisis and overdose deaths in our country and our state.

They then went on to explain how the MANCHESTER, CT HOPE INITIATIVE has successfully linked law enforcement with treatment services to provide an alternative to arrest and incarceration, while creating a path to recovery for those afflicted with the disease of addiction.

Our second presentation was made possible by the Elks who brought in a nationally recognized speaker from California: Ray Lozano is a Prevention Specialist and Youth Speaker. Ray, described how the reward system used by our brain leads to an obsessive craving of mind and body that results in our pursuit and use of substances which then takes precedence over all other healthy activities and drives.  When the video program becomes available, please share it with your local service clubs- Rotary, Elks, Lions and Kiwanis, local public access television, our schools, police, and other community organizations.

Many thanks to those who are working to “Make A Difference” in their communities to address our Addiction Crises.

Two Global Grants will provide Clean Water & Sanitation Facilities to Guatemalan Villages

Applications are in the process of being submitted to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) for two more Global Grants (GG) to support the funds necessary to purchase materials and supplies for sustainable clean water and sanitation facilities in the Mayan villages of Chajalajya and Simajulehu.  As with the 22 previous projects sponsored by District 7890, all labor will be provided by the men and women in the communities.  765 families (approximately 4,743 people) will benefit from these improvements.
District Chair for Water & Sanitation Projects Rick Lawrence is gathering the required documents, MOU’s, training templates, pro-forma cost estimates and other information that must accompany the GG Applications.  This information is being obtained from the Cooperating Organization, ALDEA, and the Host Rotary Club in La Antigua, Guatemala.
District 7890 has been the leader by providing District Designated Funds (DDF) since GG’s were initiated by TRF six years ago. Yearly, close to half the clubs in our District have assisted in the funding and this notice is intended to remind those clubs that their support has been so instrumental in achieving the required funding.
In March 2019 Rick and his wife, Elin, have scheduled their yearly visit to participate in the completion and dedication of the three villages funded by last RY’s GG’s – Pamezul, Vista Hermosa and San Vicente. Upon their return to New England in late April, they will once again offer to be the guest speaker at clubs in CT, MA and RI in order to show how these projects improve immeasurably the lives of these people.  Any club desiring more information, or to schedule such a presentation, should contact Rick by cell phone (860) 558-2793 or email: elawrlaw@sbcglobal.net.

Foreign Exchange Students enjoy activities at Springfield College

District 7890 Exchange Students got a taste of college life last weekend at Springfield College.  They kicked off activities with a wet tour of the campus and then a lunch with the President of the college at her home.  Since it was Homecoming Weekend, there were lots of alumni roaming the campus.

Our four inbound girls from Mexico, Chile, France, and Thailand passed on watching a football game because Catalina from Chile said, “ All those guys do, is roll around in the grass”.  Well, that’s one interpretation of American football but one probably not shared by enthusiastic football fans everywhere.  They opted instead, to watch afternoon movies at their host’s home.  After an all American dinner at “99”, they attended the 109th annual Springfield College Gymnastics Exhibition.  More of a
Cirque du Soleil type of show, the girls enjoyed it and even tried their hand on several of the apparatuses.

If your club would like to invite our exchange students to a club function or entertain them at a sporting or theatrical event, just contact
Rich Friedman at richefriedman@yahoo.com for more information.

Hurricane Harvey Relief

HURRICANE HARVEY Disaster Relief -  ROTARY RESPONDS
Rotarians everywhere are moved and saddened by the catastrophic events unfolding in Texas and Louisiana.  Hurricane Harvey made landfall Friday night August 25, 2017 between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor, Texas as a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 MPH.  The first Category 4 storm to make landfall in the US since 2004, Harvey dropped record amounts of rain causing massive flooding.

The Rotary Districts in the areas impacted by Harvey have established funds to receive donations as they struggle to recover from the devastating flooding and damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.  Rotary is not attempting to take the place of the Red Cross, FEMA, the National Guard or other disaster relief organizations at the local, state or federal level.  As Rotarians, we have a responsibility to bring people and organizations together to better address our community needs.   Because our local Rotary Clubs are the “boots on the ground” consisting of community leaders in all walks of life, Rotarians are uniquely positioned to “make a difference” in this crisis, to advocate for their communities, to help set priorities, and to marshal resources (volunteers, workers, material and money) where they are most needed.

Because of the size of the area impacted, (the Houston area is slightly smaller than the state of Massachusetts) donations made directly to the Rotary Districts can be distributed to Rotary Clubs and their communities in the most cost effective and timely manner taking advantage of their knowledge of local conditions.  As a volunteer organization, we can also be assured that our donations are not being diverted to fund raising or administrative overhead.

Listed below (click 'read more') are the five Rotary Districts that deserve our support. Please note that District 5890, 5910, and 5930 appear to have sustained the most damage, and they also have Federal Tax Ids for their 501C-3 organizations that will receive your tax -deductible donations.  (Please make a note of the Fed. Tax. ID on your check or in your 2017 tax file and share this information with your accountant or tax preparer.) Also make sure that your donation lists your Rotary Club or town, and your Rotary District number.

Help Bring College to Women in Afghanistan

In a small village in rural Afghanistan, girls who are graduating from high school have nowhere to go for college. We can change that. We can build a school today where these girls can go to become nurses, teachers and engineers. The Zabuli Technical College will make history as the first girls’ college in rural Afghanistan.

Everything But An Apple For The Teacher, The Newington Rotary Way

A great way for Rotarians to make an immediate impact is to partner with local government to identify and address a pressing need.  Last fall, the Rotary Club of Newington (CT) did just that.  Result: about a hundred area kids whose families have a tough time meeting school expenses got a helping hand.

District 7890 Clubs Join Together to Complete Ninth and Tenth Water Projects

Twenty-nine Rotary Clubs in northern CT and Western MA (Rotary District 7890) have joined together to fund a project that will bring fresh drinking water to two needy communities in Guatemala.  Clubs from Avon-Canton, Bloomfield, Broad Brook, Danielson, East Hartford, East Windsor, Enfield, Farmington, Kensington-Berlin,  Manchester, Newington, New Britain-Berlin, Plainfield,  Rockville, Salisbury, Southington, Torrington, Watertown, Wethersfield/Rocky Hill, Willimantic and Windsor/Windsor Locks, CT along with Massachusetts’ clubs in Holyoke, Ludlow, Palmer, Southwick, Tri-Town, West Springfield and Wilbraham/Hampden have raised at total of $100,610.  These funds will build a complete gravity fed water system with gray water filters, vented pit latrines and improved vented stoves for the 240 families (1,200 people) that live in the rural communities of Chuacacay and El Llano, Guatemala.  These are the ninth and tenth funded projects continuing the goal of Rotary International to have every Rotary Club support an international water and sanitation project every year.  By working together, pooling their resources and obtaining a Global Grant with matching funds from The Rotary Foundation, the Rotarians have been successful in adding size and strength to their chosen projects.  Two Rotary clubs from neighboring Massachusetts/Rhode Island District 7950, East Greenwich and Wakefield, RI, and the Ft. Lauderdale, FL North Beach club from District 6990 also contributed funds to achieve the fund raising goal.

District Peace Fellowship Announced

Posted by Eileen Rau on Dec 21, 2013
story thumbnail

In November, the Rotary Foundation notified our District that Amelia Charles from Deerfield, MA was chosen as our District’s first ever Rotary Peace Fellow. It was very appropriate that the application and interview process for Amelia took place during a year when the Rotary theme was Peace Though Service.

The Rotary Peace Fellowships program develops leaders who are catalysts for peace and conflict resolution in their communities and around the globe, one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus. Each year up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are chosen to participate in a master’s degree or certificate program at one of our partner universities. Fellows study subjects related to the root causes of conflict and explore innovative solutions that address real world needs. We have peace centers located around the globe.

In September, Amelia will be leaving for West Yorkshire, England to begin a 15 month Masters Degree Program at Bradford University. On her application she wrote, “In this master's degree, I want to develop my analytical understanding of peace and conflict and my technical and theoretical skills in a range of issues related to development. With a specific focus on the Middle East and Africa, I also aim to understand the interlinking contemporary and historical challenges facing sustainable peace in these regions.”

She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado concentrating in peace and religious studies, participated in numerous peace programs and was awarded several certificates in peacemaking.  Currently she is working for the Al Khatim Adlan Center for Enlightenment and Human Development in Kampala, Uganda and Khartoum, Sudan.  The Al Khatim Adlan Center (KACE) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization established in 2007 in Khartoum, Sudan and registered in Uganda in 2010. Through human and cultural development projects, KACE implements a varied program that works to establish the conditions for long-term peace and stability in Sudan. The KACE vision is to see a democratic and multicultural Sudan, where all people are equal in dignity, rights, and opportunities.

When asked why she applied for the Rotary Peace Fellowship, Amelia wrote, “As a result of both personal and professional experiences during my time in Sudan, I feel strongly committed to working in development in the Middle East and Africa, areas of ongoing political and religious tension. Graduation from a Rotary Peace Center university will support this career goal in a number of ways, especially through connecting with the dynamic network of Rotarians.”

Amelia was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Holyoke with the help of AG Christine Burns. Many thanks go to PDG Jeff Tager who guided the application and interview process to such a successful outcome. Amelia will be back in the United States this summer before she begins her studies in England. Please, join me in congratulating Amelia on her appointment as our District’s first ever Rotary Peace fellow. – Eileen Rau PDG

Rick and Elin Lawrence Celebrate Completion of Seventh Rotary Water and Sanitation Project

On February 11th, the villagers of El Pericon, Guatemala welcomed Rick and Elin Lawrence to a day-long celebration marking the completion and dedication of their village's water, sanitation and indoor cookstove improvements. This is the seventh such project financed by clubs in District 7890 and 7950.  Every year, more clubs from District 7890 have added their support for these projects, and clubs from other Districts have started to contribute as well.  This additional support has enabled larger and larger villages to be involved and reap the benefits of securing clean, running water, solid sanitation units and well-vented, raised indoor stoves.  Congratulations to Rick Lawrence, member of the Rotary Club of Manchester, CT, and his wife, Elin, for personally supporting and being ambassadors for these valuable projects that change the world, one village at a time.

So little investment, such a great return -- vote for Rotary!

Posted by Sue Klock on Dec 08, 2012

Here's a wonderful way to support Rotary!  You can help Rotary win up to 10 million United Airlines travel miles.  It won't cost you a penny - and the miles will be used to help numerous Rotary projects.

In the past Charity Miles have provided transportation for Rotary International's Gift of Life surgical teams. Last year, these teams traveled to Haiti and El Salvador, where volunteer doctors and nurses from the United States performed life-saving heart surgery on many children and provided important training for local doctors. Charity Miles have also helped Rotary International transport Iraqi children with birth defects to U.S. hospitals for treatments they cannot receive at home.

Charity Miles are also used to send volunteers to help immunize children during National Immunization Days. And, Charity Miles provide airfare for financially disadvantaged Rotary youth exchange students so they may live and study overseas for one school year, enabling 8,000 secondary school students to study abroad in 80 countries around the world.

All you have to do is go to  Charity Miles and vote for Rotary International.  You can vote once a day until December 25th

Marrow Registry Scheduled in Southwick

Join the Bone Marrow Registry on August 22, 2012, Sponsored by Rotary Club of Southwick, MA

Every year 10,000 men, women and children desperately search the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be The Match Registry of volunteer donors in hopes of finding a marrow match. Gerry Proulx is an example of one of those patients.
Gerry, a 30-year charter member of the Southwick Rotary Club, has always led an energetic and healthy life.  The owner of Proulx & Proulx Architectural Designs, a general and commercial contractor since 1974, Gerry was born in Springfield, MA.  Six months ago, Gerry received devastating news.  He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell normally responsible for producing antibodies.  Multiple myeloma is the second most common hematological malignancy in the US, and constitutes 1% of all cancers.  He is currently undergoing an aggressive course of chemotherapy at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield.  Gerry is confident that he can win this battle.  For now, the ultimate cure would be a bone marrow transplant.  YOU could be the match for a patient like Gerry.

To join the marrow registry and support people like our fellow Rotarian Gerry, please join the members of the Southwick Rotary Club on Wednesday, August 22, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Moo-licious Farm, 258 Feeding Hills Road, Southwick, MA.  If you have questions, please call 800-283-8385, ext 720 or email marrow@ribc.org.  Tissue typing & processing fees are covered by most health insurance companies in RI, CT, MA & NH.  Please bring your insurance card with you.  If you do not have health insurance coverage for these procedures, Michael's Fund of Fall Fiver will cover the cost as the event's sponsor.  There is no out-of-pocket expense to register.

World Health Assembly declares polio eradication a public health emergency

Posted by Sue Klock on May 24, 2012

Health ministers at the World Health Assembly in Geneva adopted a resolution on 25 May that declared “the completion of polio eradication to be a programmatic emergency for global public health.”

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, of which Rotary is a spearheading partner, has launched an emergency action plan because of the threat of continued transmission of polio due to funding and immunization gaps. Cases have dropped dramatically, but the plan is needed to avoid a resurgence of the disease.

Despite the dramatic drop in polio cases in the last year, the threat of continued transmission due to funding and immunization gaps has driven the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to launch the Global Polio Emergency Action Plan 2012-13.

Rotary Fellowships Highlighted at Bangkok Convention House of Friendship

Rotary Fellowships will be ably represented at this year's annual RI Convention's House of Friendship and will hold their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, May 8th, at 2:00 pm in the Convention Center, Room 17.    For those not familiar with Rotary Fellowships, these subject-area focus groups are a wonderful way of joining in and networking with Rotarians around the world that share commons interests, and a very effective tool for membership retention.  They are also a wonderful way to further vocational development through acquaintance of others in the same profession.

Some examples of Fellowship groups are:  Amateur Radio; Chess; Flying; Gourmets; Latin Culture; Marathon Running; Police and Law Enforcement; Railroads; Scouting; Travel and Hosting; and, Physicians, to name only a few of the 58 Board-recognized Rotary Fellowships in good standing with RI.  To learn more about Rotary Fellowships, visit www.rotary.org and download the Rotary Fellowship handbook.  The most recent Rotary Fellowship newsletter, The Fellowship Advancer, can be found under the District Documents link at the top of our homepage.

Whether you are a seasoned Rotarian or a newly minted member, a day spent at a Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training session is a great opportunity to learn more about Rotary and how you can help improve your club.  RLI of Northeast America, a recommended unofficial affiliate of RI, was founded in 1992 and includes 28 districts in the northeast and Bermuda.   RLI training sessions are run by Rotarians who are dedicated to imparting knowledge of Rotary and building future Rotary leaders.

This year the nearest training for District 7890 Rotarians takes place on October 15th at the Mass Mutual Conference Center in Chicopee, MA.  The training sessions are levelled into four groups:  Parts 1, 2, 3 and Grad.   Normally, attendees work through the parts year-to-year, but as multiple sessions are offered throughout the year at various locations, it is possible to go through all the parts in one or two years.   To complete online registration, go to http://www.rlinea.com/Calendar.htm.  For more information, contact Steve Jacoby.

Though it may not have been necessary for those of us in District 7890 lucky enough to have heard RI President Ray last June, it was fun to have him talk about his approach to his year -> bigger, better, and bolder Rotary using simple, common sense -> in his words: That's Cowboy Logic.  Michael Martin Murphey and his song were enjoyed by all at the convention.  To hear a bit of the song go to my Gov Sue blog.

It was another fantastic Rotary Night at the Rock Cats on Friday, May 13.  Over 200 Rotarians participated in the fun filled event which included marching in the pre-game parade with club banners, enjoying an "All You Can Eat Barbecue Picnic", throwing out the first pitch, singing God Bless America during the 7th inning and then sitting back and watching the spectacular fireworks at the end of the game!  It was a picture perfect night. On top of it all, the Rock Cats defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 2-0. PDG Frank Wargo who was there with his family and grandchildren exclaimed  "Watching my two grandchildren throw out the first pitch was worth the cost of admission."

Dear our Friends, Rotarians in District 7890, in the world,

Thank you very much for your stimulating offer for help. Although we had the tragic disaster we have never experienced, we are doing the best for everything we can do.  This crisis gives us a great sorrow. We have no words affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Many people suffered this disaster, died or lost their house. It was a grievous disaster. We all are in deeply sorrow. We prepared for the earthquake and tsunami because of living in Japan. But It was a larger than our expectation. It was far too big to prevent tsunami. It was a dreadful. It is like the hell near the seaside area after it happened.
