District 7890 Group Study Exchange Team members enjoyed a program developed just for them by the multi-district Northeast Link Committee. Pictured here, left to right: Liz Jordan, Engineer -- Pratt & Whitney, sponsored by West Hartford, Katherine Piedra, Area Service Director, Kaplan Test Prep, sponsored by the Amherst Rotary Club, Matt Hill, Sergeant - Pittsfield Police Department, sponsored by the Pittsfield Rotary Club, Barbara Spiegel, Team leader, Executive Director, Susan B. Anthony Project, member of the Torrington, CT Rotary Club, and Nate Helminiak, Assistant Manager, Eastern Mountain Sports, sponsored by the Simsbury-Granby Rotary Club.
Continuing their months of preparation for this year's Group Study Exchange with Nepal, on January 29th, the team led by Rotarian Barbara Spiegel attended a full-day program organized by the multi-district Northeast Link Committee. The program educates non-Rotarian team members in all things Rotary, and allows Rotarian team leaders to exchange ideas and learn from past leaders what to expect during this month-long exchange, usually with a culture quite foreign to Americans. Our team was lucky to meet a Link Committee member who had visited and worked in Nepal, and they continue to be in contact with him to learn more about the country they will visit.
Also attending the Northeast Link Meeting were our Immediate Past Governor, Herb Toback, Governor-elect, Sue Klock, who is a member of the Link Committee, and Governor-nominee, Eileen Rau. It is very important for district leaders to have an understanding of the Group Study Exchange Program (GSE) as well as the new Vocational Training Team Program (VTT), which may replace GSE as we know it after the Foundation's 3-year pilot Future Vision ends in 2013. Also helps in planning for the next few years to meet with other district leaders, find out what countries have been visited recently, and hear about experiences, pitfalls, concerns.
Group Study Exchange is a program of The Rotary Foundation , funded with district designated funds. Each governor=elect decides if he or she wishes to participate, finds a district in another country with which to do an exchange, and then applies to the foundation for approval of the exchange. Governors-elect who have an approved exchange have a chance to meet when they are at the International Assembly in San Diego during January prior to their governor year. Governor-elect Sue has an approved exchange with District 4100 in northwest Mexico and had the privilege of meeting District 4100 Governor-elect Jorge Itsuma Arao Toyohara.
